Eleanor was the daughter of William Julian Albert and Emily Jane Jones Albert; wife of Alexander Bliss; mother of William Bliss and Elizabeth Bancroft Bliss; and sister of Lowry, William Jr, Andrew, Talbot, William J.L., Charles and Julian.

Her husband Alexander was a colonel in the United States Army during the Civil War, serving as assistent quartermaster general of the Union forces. He persuaded his politically connected step-father George Bancroft to ask President Lincoln for a copy of the Gettysburg Address. The resulting document, one of only five known manuscript versions, is known as the "Bliss Copy" and is on display in the Lincoln bedroom of the White House.

Eleanor died in Berlin, Germany.
