Dr. Rowe Dies

Dr. O. W. Rowe, 75, of 327 Concert street, widely known veterinarian and pioneer Keokuk automobile dealer, died after a long illness at 1 o'clock this morning in St. Joseph's hospital where he had been a patient since Dec. 28, 1940.
Dr. Rowe, familarly known as "Doc" to hundreds of friends, practiced his profession her for 33 years until his illness interferred. For five years he served as assistant Iowa state veterinary surgeon, following his appointment to that post in 1917.
In 1920, he founded the garage firm which bears his name here and he was later joined in business by his son, Stanley B. Rowe, who has conducted the management of the firm since his father became ill.
Osa Wallace Rowe, son of Oliver and Melinda Ann Warner Rowe, was born on a farm in Van Buren county, Iowa, on February 20, 1866. He received his early education at Pierceville, Iowa, and later attended Wolf's Academy at Birmingham, Iowa. He taught schools in Van Buren county and taught for one year in Curtis, Nebr.
In 1890, he entered Iowa State college at Ames, Iowa, as a student, but after attending college for one year he returned to the farm and resumed his teaching career. In 1896, he returned to Ames and received his degree as doctor of veterinary medicine in 1898.
In 1900, Dr. Rowe came to Keokuk and built up a successful veterinary practice in this section of Iowa, Missouri and Illinois. His early established an animal hospital here, but when automobiles began to replace horses as a means of transportation, he gradually converted his hospital building into a garage.
Dr. Rowe was married on March 3, 1892 to Mary Almira Perkins who survives along with four children born to this union. He was united with the Baptist church early in his life and continued his affiliation with that faith.
In 1933, Dr. Rowe suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and he had been confined to his home since that time. During his extended illness, however, he bore his long suffering courageously and without complaint.
Surviving besides his widow are two sons, Finley B. Rowe and Stanley Rowe; two daughters, Mrs. June H. Off and Mrs. Vera Grout; two grandchildren, Shirley June Off and Mary Rena Rowe, all of Keokuk; a brother, George Rowe of Keokuk, and a sister, Mrs. Myrtle Glasscock of Stockport, Ia.
The body was removed to the Schmidt Memorial Home where funeral services will be held on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
