*James F. Melvin "Jim", 92, of Drexel Hill, PA, died after a long illness at home on Wednesday June 27, 2012 surrounded by his loving family.
Jim was born in Pittston, PA, on July 23, 1919. He earned his B.S. at the University of Scranton in 1942.
His fondness for the University inspired a commitment to fundraising for the school that lasted long throughout his lifetime.
Immediately following graduation Jim was drafted into the Armed Services. While in the service at Indian Town Gap he was an instructor of enlisted men. Later he deployed to the Philippines where he received a battlefield commendation under General Douglas MacArthur. Mr. Melvin earned a bronze star for distinguished service at the close of his military career.
Under the GI Bill Jim attended the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton Business School where he attained his degree in accounting and become a Certified Public Accountant. His first professional position in the field was with Ernst & Ernst in Philadelphia. He later accepted a job at New York Shipbuilding Corporation in Camden, New Jersey, where he flourished, rising to the ranks of Treasurer and Vice President before retiring from the firm. In later life, he moved into the private sector and was instrumental in supporting the business endeavors of his two sons.
Jim married his hometown sweetheart, Nancy Gallagher, in 1942 and was devoted to her until her death in 2002. Together they raised 6 children. He was a loving father and grandfather. He enjoyed travelling the world, having visited all of the continents with the exception of the Antarctic, while maintaining strong ties to his Pennsylvania heritage.
Mr. Melvin is survived by his children, Martin (Kyra), Mary Nancy Katin, Francis (Barbara), Kathleen, Michael, and Maureen (John) Flaherty; 14 grandchildren, Megan Katin, Christine Katin, Michael (Maureen) Melvin, Nicole Katin, Steven Katin, Tara (Timothy) Bernhardt, Brian Katin, Matthew (Angela) Melvin, Brendan Katin, Alexander Katin, Ryan Melvin, Katherine Katin, Caitlin Flaherty, and Emily Flaherty; 8 great grandchildren; and sister, Mary Gertrude Brown.
Relatives and friends are invited to his Funeral Monday 9:30 a.m. O'Leary Funeral Home, 640 E. Springfield Rd., Springfield, PA. 19064.
Funeral Mass: Monday 12 Noon, Church of St. Dorothy, Township Line and Burmont Road, Drexel Hill, PA. 19026.
Internment: SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery.
Contributions may be made to Holy Family Home (Little Sisters of the Poor), 5300 Chester Ave., Philadelphia, PA. 19143.
