Wilhemina Sophia “Minnie” Kaufmann was born May 22, 1905, in the Welland area (on the border of La Salle County and Lee County, Illinois). She was the 2nd eldest of 5 children to be born to Anna Maria “Mary” née Walther and John Kaufmann. Her middle name of Sophia was after her grandmother, Sophia née Schmidt Kaufmann. On July 2, 1925, she was married to John G. Hoelzer at Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Brooklyn Township in Lee County, Illinois. She and John would raise their 4 children (Stanley, Evelyn, Eunice, and Bernice) on their farm in rural Wyoming Township in Lee County, Illinois. On October 31, 1961, she lost her husband of 36 years. Minnie was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Compton and later its WELCA church circle. She was also a member of the Wyoming Unit of Homemakers' Extension, Paw Paw-Compton Merrygolds, Mendota Hospital Auxiliary, the Mendota Lutheran Home Auxiliary and was a 10-year volunteer with the American Red Cross. Minnie passed away at the Mendota Lutheran Home in Mendota, Illinois, on Friday, March 17, 1995. Funeral services held Monday, March 20th at Immanuel Lutheran Church, with Reverend Gary Erickson, officiating with burial in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Neal and Norman Rogers, John Hoelzer, Merle, Dr. Myron, Milton D., David C. and Dean Rapp, and Richard Dunn Jr. She was survived by her 4 children, her 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 1 step-grandchild, and 5 step-great-grandchildren. She was also survived by her sister, Alma. She was preceded in death by her husband, her brother, 2 sisters, 1 grandchild, and 2 great-grandchildren.
