On settling in Danvers, he was a stone mason, living on the inside corner of Prince and Walnut Streets. The barn there is set up, on a large stone foundation, deftly solving, through masonry, the high water table problem of that neighborhood.

His son Charles moved to Somerville, his family afterwards settling in Wilmington. His son Supervus and family moved to North Andover. Henrietta (Hinxman) (Dean) Samuel may have been a much younger sister, instead of being his eldest daughter. Her first marriage record, in 1855 in Salem, lists her father's name Thomas. James's second marriage, also there, but just a year earlier, lists his parents as Thomas and Susan, which also happens to be both his middle name, and the name of his first wife. Otherwise, no other parental information has been found, for either Henrietta or James.

He had senile dementia in the final years of his life. Sometime after his second wife died, he moved in with daughter Martha and her Putnam family, on Putnam Lane, Danvers Center, before moving across the valley from there, to Danvers State Hospital on Hathorne Hill. He is also recorded there, on the memorial to patients who died at the hospital, located on the former grounds (Find A Grave Memorial# 65144050).
