A native of Wayne County, now Brantley, he was the son of William Spencer Ammons, CSA, and Gatsey Highsmith Ammons.
Survivors include his wife, Addie Linker Ammons; three daughters, Hazel Jacobs (husband Aaron) of Atkinson, Verdie Johnson (husband Ernest) and Betty Jean Ammons, both of Hortense; four sons, Leighton and Roy Ammons of Hortense, J. Vernon Ammons of Brunswick and R. L. Ammons (wife Pearl "Nookie") of Tampa, FL; one brother, W. S. Ammons of Blackshear; and seven grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at Ammons Cemetery near Atkinson on Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m.
Mincy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
