Gladys Gale Johnson, the matriarch of a grand family, went home to be with her father in heaven Sept. 9, 2011, at the age of 87. She was surrounded by family at her daughter, Earlene's, home in Spring Creek, Nev.
Gladys was born in a small adobe house in Franklin, Greenlee County, on July 13, 1924, to parents Ira Bartlett "Bart" Gale and Bertha Minerva "Noie" Layton Gale.
She had three sisters and two brothers who were all raised in the same adobe house in Franklin on Stinson Lane to a family who was devoted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Gladys was married March 7, 1942, to Ray Ervin "RE" Johnson in Duncan. They had five children, with three surviving: Earlene, Carolene and Ricky. Besides RE being a World War II veteran, the family moved around a lot, which made Gladys feel like a gypsy. This lifestyle provided a forum for many adventure stories and life experiences.
After the passing of her husband, RE, on Oct. 11, 1974, she moved from Duncan to Green Valley to be closer to her daughters.
She had a mobile home and started her own cleaning business. She worked in a retirement community, cleaning homes and yards and even taking care of other elderly people.
She built up quite a clientele and loved "her people," and they idolized her.
She especially loved doing yardwork. One of her clients died, willing Gladys a condominium to live in.
She sure loved that place and especially her independence! Gladys worked and drove a car until 2005 at the spry "young" age of 81. The only things that stopped her were bad knees, which ended up being replaced.
Her daughter, Carolene, looked after her during this time, with a short stay in a nursing home for recovery.
In 2006, Gladys moved to Nevada to live with her eldest daughter, Earlene, where she shared her time among three different homes.
The family joked that she was living a gypsy's life all over again. She never complained and was happy to be around her grandchildren.
Gladys was diagnosed with breast cancer in late 2006.
It spread to her lungs and was diagnosed in 2011. She declined rapidly after her only son, Ricky, passed away unexpectedly April 15, 2011, in Reserve, N.M.
Gladys was preceded in death by two of her babies; her parents; all four of her siblings; her husband, RE; and her son, Ricky.
Gladys is survived by her daughters: Earlene (Ivan) Tipton of Round Mountain/Spring Creek, Nev., Carolene (Duane) Francom of Tucson; grandchildren Kimberly (Marley) Elam of Spring Creek, Dak Tipton of Spring Creek, Jerid (Claudia) Francom of Winston-Salem, N.C., Shelby (Jennie) Francom of Gilbert, Glen (Shauna) Francom of Tucson, Lisa (Jeff) Cannon of San Antonio, Texas, Rikki (David) Taylor of Fountain Hills, Ray Ervin Johnson II of Colorado; and numerous great-grandkids, great-great-grandkids, and extended family and friends.
The services will be held March 24, 2012, at 10 a.m. in the LDS ward chapel in Duncan.
The "going home" celebration will be for both Gladys and Rick Johnson (pictured below), with graveside services directly following and a meal after graveside services back at the LDS Church.
