LAYTON - James Emil "Woody" Woodward, 59, died Monday, June 3, 2002 after an extended illness. He was surrounded by his family.

He was born October 17, 1942 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the son of Emil A. and Pearl Bartle Woodward. He married Neva Coulam April 16, 1965. They were later divorced.

Woody was a lifetime resident of Davis County. He graduated from Davis High School in 1960, and served in the Army National Guard from 1964-1970. He was a past member of the Layton City Volunteer Police Force and was employed by Layton City for 29 years, most of which serving as the superintendent of Layton City's Parks Department. Woody oversaw the design, development and maintenance of many of Layton's beautiful parks, including a new park located at 25 East 1500 North in Layton, which has been named in his honor. He was very passionate about his job and proud of the contribution the City's parks have made to the community. He was especially proud of the Christmas light displays, which have been set up each year at the Layton Commons Park. Woody was very fond of his co-workers and employees, and looked forward to spending his days with them. Woody was a great Harley Davidson enthusiast and loved riding with friends.
