Known as the oldest and best known musical director of Norwegian birth in the United States. In 1870, he was the leader of the Champaign and Urbana bands, an instructor of music at Illinois Industrial University, and choir leader at the Universalist Church in Urbana. He moved to Chicago in 1872, and became the leader of the Norwegian Music Corps. In 1874, he was elected Director in Chief and President for the United Scandinavian Singers of America, and he became the instructor for Nordmaindenes Sangforening, and held that position for 25 years. With Nordmaindenes Sangforening, he participated in the first Scandinavian singing festival at Philadelphia in 1887. At the Scandinavian singing festival which was held in Chicago during the World's Fair 1893, he conducted a combined chorus of 1,000 singers.
