Novelist and poet of popular style. He was also the author of ten books of poetry and a monumental "History of French poetry", the result of 40 years of work. His first novel, "Alain and the negro", published in 1953, is made into a film by Julien Duvivier. But it is with "Swedish matches", in 1969, he met a huge public success and just misses the Prix Goncourt. Seven episodes of the adventures of young Oliver will follow in thirty years "Hazelnuts Wild" (1974), and "David Oliver"(1986),"Olivier 1940" (2000). Passionate about poetry, he published in 1976 a "History of French poetry" in nine volumes, and himself wrote numerous poems gathered in a dozen collections. A piece of his work that earned him in 1969, the Grand Prize for poetry of the French Academy.
