Chief Norman Elvis Lawler, USN 1915 - 2010 Norman Lawler was born on September 17, 1915 in Franklin, KY and died on March 27, 2010 in Long Beach, CA. He was the great grandson of Revolutionary War patriot John Grinter and was of Irish, English and Cherokee descent. His service in the U.S. Navy from 1934-56 included duty on the USS Cincinnati, Anderson, McLeash and Boyle. During WWII, he saw combat in the North Atlantic, Pearl Harbor, Midway, Japan, China, North & South Pole, Panama and Suez Canals, Mediterranean, Naples and Sicily. Norman was a father, grandfather, friend and neighbor who always had time to smile, talk under the guava tree, play backgammon or share a "Grandpa Joke". He was a great man that we all cherished! He is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Avonola and children, Jeanne Hood and Marilyn Lawler. He i s survived by children, Michael and Renee Lawler; grandchildren, Craig, Trina, Lisa and Cindie Hood; great grandchildren, David and Joshua Wiseman, Madeline Hood and Grant Weinman; and sister, Clara Stovall. Memorial service on Saturday, May 22, 2010 from 12pm-4pm, 1924 Montair Ave., Long Beach, CA. Burial will be at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland OR.
