Journalist, Diplomat. During the 1880s and 1890s, he worked as a journalist for various newspapers in parts of the United States. He was editor of the Atlantic Monthly (1898-99) and with Frank N. Doubleday he founded the publishing house of Doubleday and Page Company, in 1900. He was also journalist and editor of World’s Work Magazine, until 1913. After his inauguration, President Woodrow Wilson appointed Page ambassador to Great Britain in 1913. By the outbreak of World War I, he had become popular with the upper class and the general public in Great Britain. When the British steamship Lusitania was sunk by a German submarine on May 7, 1915, he called for a U.S. declaration of war from the US Congress which resulted in swift victories for the Allies and America. Due to illness, President Wilson accepted Page’s retirement in August 1918 and died shortly after at age 63.
