Born in the Bronx in New York to English immegrant parents, David B. Kenyon and family moved to Chicago around the 1860s. He enlisted in the US Civil War on the side of the north, earning the title of Captain. He later worked as a fireman, in Chicago during the time if the Great Fire in 1866. He was the Cheif of the first black Engine Co and was the inventor of the fire pole, still in use in many fire houses today. He also invented an automatic door to let the horses and wagons out and as a result of these two inovation in fire fighting, his company was often at the scene before any other company, usually saving more lives and property. He was killed in the line of duty while answering a call, having been run over by a carriage after being thrown from his own.
