Charles Francis was the first child born to parents John and Margaret Molloy SKELENGER of Newark, Essex, New Jersey. Charles married Florence B Kradell, daughter of Gustave and Amelia L Ochsner Kradell, of this city, on 14 April 1917 at St James Catholic Church, in Newark, New Jersey. The ceremony was performed by Father James Molloy, CP; Charles' maternal uncle.
Prior to his marriage, Charles F served as a Private in Battery C, 1st Battalion, Field Artillery of the federalized New Jersey National Guard. In 1916-17 his unit was deployed to the Arizona-Mexico border to secure the Douglas, AZ, area against incursions by Mexican bandits.
Following a brief period living in Chicago, IL, Charles and Florence spent their lives in Newark, NJ, removing to Fort Lauderdale, FL, following his retirement. Charles' beloved wife died while living in FL. Charles then removed to Virginia Beach, VA to live with his only child, Michael C, until Charles' death in 1977.
Charles F was a tenth generation descendant of Jacobus Schellinger (1625-1693) of Amsterdam, Netherlands; Jacobus was the Dutch immigrant who first brought his family's name to the New World circa 1650.
