Ruth was born the first of three children to Melville Mix and Ruby Boyer, who were married at age 20 in 1917.

Ruth was counted at age 11 with her parents in the 1930 census in Knox Co., southwestern Indiana on the Wabash River at the Illinois border.

She grew up in the area and graduated from Edwardsport High School in 1936.

On February 04, 1937 Ruth married Robert W. "Bob" Carnahan and they had three children. Ruth was a member of First Baptist Church of Bicknell since 1937.

Ruth and her husband Bob were farmers and grain handlers in northern Knox County, establishing Carnahan Grain, Inc.

She was the first woman to serve on the First Federal Bank Board of Directors in Vincennes. She volunteered at the area nursing homes visiting with the residents and seeing that every resident received a card for every birthday and holiday.

Ruth was widowed upon the death of Bob in 1975. She also outlived both her younger brothers by a couple decades, and died at age 92, at United Methodist Village in Lawrenceville, Illinois.
