Martin Alfred Smith was born in Bennington Vermont on Sept. 12 1841. He was the son of Mary Ann hills and Jacob Norton Smith. He died at Daulphin Alabama on Feb. 26 !865. He was a soldier in the civil war. His company was Co.. G. 11th Illinois Infantry, Union Soldier. Martin joined the service on July 11 1861. Martin died of complications of Disintary. He was buried next to the sea outside of Fort Gaines The Fort Museum has a picture of him on the wall. It also has his name along with many names of other soldiers that died and was buried in this same buriel spot.
