U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the University of North Carolina, 1940, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1942 and open a private law practice in Asheville, North Carolina. During World War II, he served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Air Corps, (1942-45). After the war, he was a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives, (1951-52), solicitor of the Nineteenth Solicitorial District of North Carolina, (1952-54) and a member of the North Carolina State Senate, (1971-77). In 1977, he was elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-fifth and Ninety-sixth Congresses, serving until 1981. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he served as special superior court judge in Buncombe County, North Carolina, (1984-89).
