ROGER R. LAWHEAD – Age 80, went to be with the Lord in his sleep at home on January 26, 1996. Roger was born in beach, North Dakota on December 22, 1915, and had lived in the Ridgefield area for the last 52 years. Roger is survived by his wife, Elma R. Lawhead, at the family home in Ridgefield. They were planning on celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on February 26th of this year. Other family includes son Gary Lawhead and his wife Chris of Salem, OR; and daughter Sharon Zoller and husband Rick of Richland, WA; grandchildren Collette Raymond and husband Brian of Vancouver, WA, Scott Lawhead of Salem, OR, Richy Zoller, Andy Zoller, Adrienne Zoller, and Aeby Zoller, of Richland, WA; and great-grandson Kody Raymond of Vancouver. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, John Q. and Minerva (Greenup) Lawhead, brothers Harold and Norval Lawhead, and sister Nell Callender, and is survived by sister Hazel Clark of Vancouver and brother Don Lawhead of Kodiak, Alaska, and a large extended family. Roger was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Army, was a prisoner of was for 3-1/2 years in the Philippine Islands and Japan, and a survivor of the Bataan Death March. He worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital as a fiscal officer for 25 years, and had been retired since 1970. He was an active charter member of the Pleasant View Church of the Nazarene, and was also active in community activities, including the Ridgefield School Board and PTA. Roger was a member of the Fire Mountain Chapter of the Ex-Prisoner-of-War Organization, and was recently named chapter commander. Roger enjoyed family activities, helping friends and family when needed, gardening, following local sports activities, and was an avid golfer. Friends and family are invited to attend a service to honor Roger’s life on Wednesday, January 31st, 10:00 a.m. at Memorial Gardens Chapel, 1101 N.E. 112th Ave., Vancouver, WA. Viewing is available at the Chapel on Tuesday between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., and immediately preceding the service. Memorials may be made to the Pleasant View Church of the Nazarene for the Northwest Nazarene College Scholarship fund, or the Washington State World War II Memorial, c/o Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs, P.O. Box 41150, Olympia, WA 98504-1150.
