Bill B. Holt, Naval officer and aviator, died in Culpeper, Virginia, on June 17, 2012. He was ninety years old.

Bill was born in Perryton, Texas, but lived most of his early years in Hutchinson, Kansas. As a young man in his early twenties and during World War II, he was stationed as a Navy pilot in Washington State, where he met his beloved wife of sixty-eight years, Helen Holt.

Bill had an active and distinguished career as a Navy officer, flying the Catalina PBY patrol plane in the North Pacific during the war, and later traveling extensively with his wife and children throughout the United States and Europe. Retiring from the Navy after 26 years, he worked for Congressman Sam Stratton of New York, as his administrative assistant, and later moved to Elkton, Virginia, where he and Helen opened an antiques business, The Curiosity Shop, which was a fixture in downtown Elkton for over 30 years.

During his working years, Bill was a lifelong learner, studying Italian and French, while serving in Naples, Italy and Paris, France, and, during his Washington, D.C. years, completing his college degree at George Washington University, and doing extensive graduate work in political science at the University of Maryland.

In Elkton, Bill became an expert in antiques, and especially antique tools, while running the Curiosity Shop. During his years in Elkton, Bill also devoted much of his time to the Rockingham County community, serving on the Elkton Town Council, the Chamber of Commerce, and in the Rotary and Lions clubs; he was still attending Rotary meetings in his 90th year. He was also a principal supporter of the refurbishment and sustainment of the Miller Kite House in Elkton. One of Bill's proudest accomplishments was his volunteer work for the American Cancer Society, and he served tirelessly on its behalf for many years.

He is survived by his loving wife, Helen; his children, Steven Holt of Culpeper, Va., Susan Steiman of McLean, Va., Bill Holt of Lake Tahoe, Nev., and Katherine Struck of Columbia, Md., as well as 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
