Elizabeth Eleanor (Johnston) Alton was the daughter of Judge Charleston "Charles" McCreery Johnston Sr. and the former Rebecca Ann Hammond of Bolivar, Pennsylvania. She was the granddaughter of James B. Hammond Sr., the founder of Bolivar, PA and pioneer Brick Manufacturer.

She was married to Thomas Wilson Alton, son of George W. and Anna (Squiggins) Alton of Ohio, on May 1904 in Connellsville, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, USA.
They resided in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Illinois and eventually settled in Malibu Lake in Agoura, California. They had no children.

She was a Wireless & Morse Telegraphy Instructor at the State Council of Defense, Chicago.

She loved poetry. In 1918 she wrote a poem for President Theodore Roosevelt. He sent her a thank-you letter which she treasured.

She went into the nursing profession. Her husband was in a severe auto accident which left him invalid. She nursed him for about fifteen years before he passed away. Thomas preceded her in death in 1954.

She was an accomplished pianist and when she was young she played jazz music for the silent film industry. She taught piano lessons clear into her 90's.

In 1948, she became the first charter member of the Methodist Church in Agoura, California. (Now the United Methodist Church of Westlake Village) After her passing they built an addition to the church naming it "Alton Hall" in her honor.
