Baseball Broadcaster. A 1994 recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award, Murphy was born in Oklahoma. He started his career broadcasting minor league games for the Muskogee Reds' after service in the Marines in World War 2. He started his major league broadcasting career 1954 doing Red Sox games on radio with Curt Gowdy . After a six year stint in 'Beantown' he left for Baltimore briefly before signing on with the expansion New York Mets in 1962. He teamed with Ralph Kiner and Lindsey Nelson to become one of the most beloved broadcasters in baseball history. Known for a caring, personable style of play by play, he was a mainstay for National League fans every summer in New York until his retirement in 2003. His broadcasting philosophy was simple "Don't look back over your shoulder, the game is right there in front of you, so I just call it as I see it and I don't worry about yesterday's score."
