Ulysses Kirk Bates was born in 1837 in Ohio to Harriet Greene and Louden Arnold Bates. At age 17, Ulysses moved with his family to Polk, Wapello Iowa. In 1859 at age 21, Ulysses married Margaret Ann Judson in Cuba, Monroe Iowa. They lived in Mantua, Monroe where they farmed and had 6 children, 3 of whom died in infancy.
