Brigadier General (Ret.) Merrill Sanders Baker, 81 of Lumberton, MS quietly finished an event-filled life at Select Specialty Hospital in Gulfport, MS. He is survived by his wife pf 61 years, Gloria Cowan Baker, daughter Cindy Baker Mercer (Keith) of Hattiesburg, MS, grandson, Justin S. Mapp of Montreal, Canada, brother Mason Baker (Charlene) of Oxford, MS., and sister, Betty Baker Saterfiel of Metairie, LA. He was preceded in death by daughter, Jan Baker Mapp, son-in-law, David A. Mapp, his parents, Alva & W. E. Baker, brother, W. E. Baker, Jr., and sister, Martha Baker Namie.

Merrill began his military service with Co A, 106th Engineer Bn., 31st Infantry Division, Purvis, MS. He was activated for the Korean War and sent to South Carolina. After the war, he was Commissioned a 2nd Lt and rose to the rank of Brigadier General (Ret.). He served as Battalion Commander of the 106th Engineer Group. His final assignment was the 184th TRANS BDE in Laurel, MS. He also commanded units in Purvis, Lumberton and Mendenhall. General Baker was born Oct 11, 1930 in Lumberton, MS, graduated from Lumberton High School in 1949, attended Pearl River Junior College for 2 years, married December 28, 1951. He served in active duty 1950-1952, and 37 years in the Mississippi National Guard.

One of his greatest pleasers was watching his Grandson Justin play professional soccer with the Montreal Impact and saw him make a goal as recently as last week. Gen Baker was a good citizen, loved his city, his state and his country. He donated and placed a flag on each veteran's grave in the Lumberton Cemetery many years. One of his main objectives was to build a Veterans Memorial Park in Lumberton, MS to honor all Veterans. This was completed and dedicated on Memorial Day, May 31, 2004. The family expresses sincere appreciation to caregivers, Glenda Cobb, Karen Kirby, Sondra Boutwell, Elaine Reesor, Kenneth Bowling and Anna Diraimo.

Funeral Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at Lumberton United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. with burial at Lumberton City Cemetery. Pallbearers are Ken Baker, Mac Baker, Preston Gill, Joe Price, Lee Taylor and Al Harrington.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Lumberton United Methodist church in Lumberton, MS.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at Lumberton United Methodist Church for Mr. Merrill S. Baker, 81, of Lumberton, Mississippi who died Saturday, June 23, 2012. Reverend Keith Hagenson will officiate at the service. Burial will follow in the Lumberton City Cemetery.

Mr. Baker is preceded in death by his parents, Walter Eugene and Alva McDaniels Baker; one daughter, Jan Baker Mapp; one brother, W.E. Baker, Jr.; one sister, Martha B. Namie; and one son-in-law, David A. Mapp.

Suvivors include his wife, Gloria C. Baker; one daughter, Cindy (Keith) Mercer of Hattiesburg, MS; one sister, Betty B. Saterfiel of Metairie, LA; one brother, Mason Baker of Oxford, MS; and one grandson, Justin S. Mapp.
