Anne was christened on 30 Nov 1856, the tenth of twelve children born to Ole Ingebriktsen and his wife, Ane Jensdatter Norbye. Although her stone is inscribed with September 8th as her birthdate, she was recorded in church records as being born 12 September, on the Sirum farm in Selbu. Her father died in a logging accident when she was five years old. When Anne was ten, her mother left Norway to follow some of Anne's older siblings to America. After a few years in Fillmore County, Anne and her mother settled near her brother Albert in Norman County.

Anne married Theodore O. Stennes in about 1873 in Norman County, Minnesota. Their son, Edward's county biography indicate four children, Edward being second oldest. However, Milla's name is clearly inscribed as Anne and Theodore's daughter and she would have been the youngest child, not the oldest. (Anne's two gravestones have different spellings of her first name.)
