After her arrival in the U.S., she had at least 10 more children. Notably, she gave birth twice in one year, first to a girl named Matilda, who did not survive infancy, and next to a girl also named Matilda, who did not survive toddlerhood.
Emelia died from a "heart attack" early one morning while at home.
At the time of her death, Emelia left the following adult married children:
-Mrs. Edith Spano Lombardo (b. 1910, m. 1928, d. 1994)
-Mrs. Jennie Spano Alecci (b. 1912, m. 1930, d. 1998)
-Mrs. Carmella Spano Cocco (b. 1916, m. 1935, d. 2012)
In addition, she left the following minor children:
-Martha Spano (b. 1920, d. 2000)
-Genevieve Spano (b. 1922, d. 1999)
-Joseph Spano (b. 1924, d. 2007)
-Armand Spano (b. 1927, d. 1998)
-Paul Spano (b. 1929, d. 1966)
There appears to have been a practice in this family to put the wrong year of birth on a mother's gravestone. On Emelia Spano's death certificate, her year of birth is given, by her daughter Mrs. Carmella Cocco, as 1892. Prior documents show Emelia's year of birth was 1890. Her gravestone shows her year of birth as 1893.
Emelia's daughter Carmella may have intended the date discrepancy on her mother's gravestone. By chance, Carmella had two gravestones. The first is found at Carmella's first husband's grave, circa 1952, and shows Carmella's birth date as 1916, a date that is corroborated by the 1920 U.S. census and by a written oath signed by both Carmella and her father on her marriage license in 1935.
However, in her old age, Emelia's daughter Carmella claimed to have been born in 1918, a date that is not supported by any documentation, but which nonetheless was put on her own gravestone in accordance with her wishes.
Note that, on Emelia's death certificate, her daughter Carmella Cocco identifies her mother's parents as John Cianella and Mary Calvano. There is no telling what their real names were. It appears that Emelia had a brother Anthony/Antonio who also settled in Erie, Pennsylvania, and who also died there from a "heart attack." His death certificate lists his parents as John and Maria Ciannella.
