Daughter of George and Elizabeth Irving Oliver, she was a sister to James Oliver, of the Oliver Plow fame.
Dorothy arrived in America in 1834 and came to Mishawaka in December 1836.
She married Alexander Sandilands in 1837; he died January 10, 1871. They resided for many years at 134 W. Joseph Street, now Mishawaka Ave. She was the mother of eight children. Four died in infancy, one (John) died in the Civil War, and three survived her:
