Miss Emily Lewis was one of three ladies instrumental in establishing the Friends in Council cultural group of Monroe, Mi. She originated the idea of the group. The all women's club was organized in 1883, to "develop and maintain interest in reading and study to advance the cultural community". The original group had 19 members and is still in existence. Each year, the members decide on a program, and then each month, a member presents her program about the topic, followed with discussion in the group. Emily was a member until her death in 1926 at the age of 84 years old (by Lo Marie)

Emily was laid to rest in Woodland Cemetery in the Lewis family lot.

*MEN, Feb. 8, 1926 - Funeral services for Miss Emily Lewis who died suddenly at her residence on South Washington Street, Saturday were held at her late home this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with the Rev. Stewart McClelland pastor of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial was made in Woodland Cemetery. Miss Lewis was for 68 years a teacher in Presbyterian sunday school and was daughter of a pioneer merchant of this city. She resided on Washington Street for many years. Died Feb. 6, 1926, buried in Woodland Cemetery.
