A memorial service for Dr. Roderick Macleod, formerly of Urbana, will be held Sunday, Oct. 21, 4 p.m. at the Community United Church of Christ, 805 S. Sixth St., Urbana, on the UI campus. A piper is set to play at the service from 3:40 to 4:10 p.m. and then again from 6 to 6:30 p.m. on Sunday. Members of the community are welcome to share their memories of Dr. Macleod. A potluck will follow the short service.
Dr. Macleod, 70, died Sept. 3, 2007, at the home of his brother, William, in the village of Barvas, Isle of Lewis, Scotland, after a battle with cancer.
Dr. Macleod was born Dec. 31, 1936, at Barvas. At age 12 he attended the Nicholas Institute in Stornoway, Scotland, and later, Glasgow University, where he received a B.Sc. degree. He received a PhD degree from Cambridge University in molecular cell biology. After graduating, he was offered a two-year post at the University of Illinois and arrived at the UI in the autumn of 1963. He ended up staying at the University for 43 years and received numerous teaching awards, including the William F. Prokasy Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in 2002 and the Campus Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in 2001. He spent a sabbatical year at Oxford University in 1970.
He retired in 2001 as associate professor from the University of Illinois and became emeritus associate professor of cell and structural biology.
He is survived by his brother, William, sister-in-law, Christina, of Barvas, Scotland, his sister, Christina, of Ness, Scotland, and numerous nephews and nieces. He is also survived by countless grateful students and members of the local recovery community to whom he gave endless hours of his time and experience, strength and hope.
He returned home in January 2007 and spent his last months in the village of his youth, being cared for by his family. He is buried in Barvas cemetery next to his parents, within sound of his beloved North Atlantic ocean.
