He was born March 23, 1921, in Erie, son of the late Harry and Laurena Ladner Barthelmes.
He worked for Sims Co. as a traffic manager.
He served in the Army Air Forces during World War II and received a Purple Heart.
He was a member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church.
He was a life member of the Siebenbuerger Club and the Alliance of Transylvania Saxons.He enjoyed bowling, gardening and shuffleboard.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Norman Barthelmes.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Helen Melzer Barthelmes ; three sons, Bill Barthelmes and his wife, Barb, Rob Barthelmes and his wife, Bonnie, all of Erie, and Dave Barthelmes and his wife, Teri, of Wisconsin; a daughter, Debra Euston and her husband, Dave, of Erie; a sister, Mildred Loesch of Erie; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Francis V. Kloecker Funeral Home, 2502 Sassafras St. A service will be held there Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. R.K. Weber officiating.
Burial will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
