Seaman Knapp was born in the Knapp family home located on the Iowa State campus. He graduated from Iowa State in civil engineering and worked in banking from 1910 to 1926, becoming president of the Union National Bank in Ames in 1917. In 1927 he opened the Knapp Insurance Agency which he operated until 1965 when he sold it to his son, A. B. Knapp.
He was survived by his wife, a son, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by another son, a brother, two sisters, and a granddaughter.
