HENRY BERNER (d. 1869)

DIED:
On Wednesday, July 13th, at his residence in this village, of inflamation of
the lungs, Mr. Henry Berner, aged 48 years.
It is not often that we have to record so painful an event as the death of Mr.
Berner. He was one of our oldest and most respected citizens, a kind husband,
pleasant and gentlemanly in society, prompt, energetic and reliable in business.
His fellow citizens have repeatedly manifested their appreciation of his many
good qualities by conferring upon him offices of trust and honor, in all of
which he acquitted himself with general satisfaction. But alas--poor Henry! He
will see us no more, nor gladden our hearts with his presence. His desolate
widow and mourning relatives and friends have the heartfelt sympathies of our
whole community. Peace be with him.

THE FUNERAL OF MR. BERNER
The last sad rites to the memory of our friend Henry Berner, were paid on Friday
last. Being a member of the Fire Department, the firemen turned out in force,
and marched to the cemetery, headed by the band, and followed by a long train of
carriages. Such an attendance to his funeral gave evidence of his popularity
among our citizens, who, in this way, exhibited their respect for him and their
sympathy for his bereaved family.

DEATH OF AN OLD RESIDENT.—Henry Berner, Esq., one of our eldest and most esteemed
German fellow citizens, died in this village last Wednesday morning. Mr. Berner
has made Manitowoc his home for the last sixteen years, and has been one of our
leading citizens ever since. He has filled various offices, and among them was
chief of the fire department. In fact he was the first man to organize a fire
department at Manitowoc. He also was the first one to pay cash to our farmers for
their grain, which done away with a great deal of the store pay in those days. Out
of respect to his memory, the flags of the several engine houses were raised at
half-mast Wednesday. Peace to his ashes.
His funeral will take place to-day (Friday).

The funeral of Mr. Henry Berner, which took place last Friday, was one of the
largest we have ever seen in this county. The village officers, foremen, and the
different German societies, including the Turner Verien, participated in it,
which showed how high the deceased stood among his fellow citizens. Thus has
another of the old settlers and most influential man passed away from among us.
