Courier-Journal, Louisville, Kentucky, May 30, 1893, p. 8 (sub 'DEATH OF MRS. BARBEE - The Final Summons Comes To a Noble Christian Woman...'):
The announcement of the death of Mrs. Eliza Barbee will be received with sorrow by the many friends whom she made through her noble traits of character and Christian virtues. Mrs. Barbee was born in Lexington in 1821, and was the daughter of Mr. Thomas Cain. She married Mr. John Barbee, the ex-Mayor of Louisville and founder of the insurance firm of Barbee & Castleman, the largest at the time of formation of any similar enterprise in the South. Mrs. Barbee died at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the residence of Col. John B. Castleman, 1415 Fourth avenue. She had been quite low for about a week with asthma, but had partially recovered from the attack, when the effects of physical exhaustion became apparent, and she sank rapidly. She was a member of the Christian Church, and in her daily life evidenced a devout Christian spirit. Two daughters and a son survive her - Mrs. John B. Castleman, Mrs. J. N. Galleher, wife of the late Episcopal Bishop of New Orleans, and Mr. Thomas Barbee, of Pewee Valley. Col. Castleman is now at the Annapolis Naval Academy, and has been notified to return at once. The funeral arrangements have not been completed. The interment will be in Cave Hill.
