Donald J. Mullin, 84, of Sioux City died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at a Sioux City nursing home following a brief illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with the Rev. Thomas Geelan officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Northside Funeral Home.

Mr. Mullin was born Aug. 29, 1916, on a farm in Maloy, Iowa, the son of William and Nell (Lambert) Mullin. He was raised in the Maloy area until the family moved to Des Moines in the mid-1930s. He graduated from Des Moines Dowling High School. He married Dorothy G. Francke on Oct. 11, 1941, in Des Moines. She died Jan. 15, 1995, in Sioux City. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard until being discharged in November 1945.

He worked for Murphy Realty and Burch Manufacturing in Des Moines. In 1957, he purchased Sioux City Tent and Awning and moved to Sioux City. The company later became Mullin Awning and Siding in Sioux City and Sioux Falls. He was chairman of the company and worked until suffering a stroke in September 1999. He was elected to the Sioux City City Council in 1964 and served on the council four years. He was mayor from Jan. 2, 1966, to Jan. 2, 1968. Upon retiring from the City Council, he was presented the Kiwanis Medal for Outstanding Community Service.

He served as president of the Upper Midwest Canvas Products Manufacturers and the Sioux City Rotary Club. He was elected to the board of directors of the First Federal Savings and Loan of Sioux City in 1968, and he served on the Briar Cliff College Board of Trustees, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Lay Advisory Board and the board of directors of Canvas Products Association International. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Chamber of Commerce and the Sioux City Boat Club.

He was an avid golfer and had a love for Notre Dame Universtiy.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Sue and Wayne Lilla of Sioux City; two sons and their wives, Rick and Sue, and Thomas and Marigail, all of Sioux City; nine grandchildren, Shelly Kratz, Brian and Karen Lilla, Megan, John, Matt, Molly, Michael and Mark Mullin; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Kathleen Ryan of Des Moines, and Regina and her husband, Cleo Lynch of Maloy; and his caregiver, Connie Schultz of Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters.

Pallbearers will be his grandchildren.

A memorial has been established in his name.
