DELTA DEMOCRAT-TIMES

Greenville, Washington Co., MS—Monday, 12 February 1940

 

           S.F. Alford, 66, prominent Delta planter and member of the Issaquena county board of supervisors, died suddenly at his home on Hopedale plantation, 4 miles west of Grace, at 10 o'clock yesterday morning.

           Mr. Alford was a native Mississippian. Born in Rankin county, he came to the Delta about 40 years ago and since that time has engaged in plating in Issaquena county. He was active in the affairs of the county, serving as a member of the board of supervisors from the fifth district. He was also a director in Deer Creek Compress at nearby Rolling Fork.

           He leaves his wife; one son, Floyd Alford, jr., Grace; three daughters, Mrs. George Healy, wife of the managing editor of the Times-Picayune, New Orleans; Mrs. Garth Gilchrist, Louisville, Ky.; and Miss Roberta Alford, Grace. A sister, Mrs. Lawrence, lives in Atlanta, Georgia

           Funeral services conducted by the Rev. Butler, pastor of the Episcopal Church of Hollandale, will be held at 3 o'clock this afternoon from the family residence near Grace. Burial will follow in Greenfield Cemetery, near Glen Allan, with Wells Funeral Home in charge.
