Death came to William B. Alford last Tuesday morning at two o'clock [October 4] at the Ferndale Hospital where he had been operated on a few days before for a trouble of long standing. For a time it was hoped that he would recover, but complications which set in made his condition hopeless and despite the best efforts of medical skill and attention he passed away at the time mentioned above.

His death came as a shock to the multitude of people in this community and elsewhere who claimed him as a friend. For years he had suffered at intervals the severest pain and had borne his burden so uncomplainingly that hardly one of his intimate friends had ever dreamed that he was in anything but the best of health.

William B. Alford was born in Ohio on October 20, 1851, and had he lived until the 20th of the present month would have been 70 years of age. When he was 21 years of age, in the year 1872, he came to Humboldt county, residing first at Hydesville, where he had relatives. In 1875 he came to Ferndale, where he entered into partnership with his brother, the late Dr. F.A. Alford, in the pharmacy business. He had made his home here continually up to the time of his death, remaining in the same business.

At San Jose he was united in marriage in 1877 to Miss Mary Richmond, who survives him. He also leaves a daughter, Mrs. Robert Barr, of Maple Creek, as well as other more distant relatives.

"Bill" Alford, as he was familiarly known to a host of friends, was a whole-souled man, who during his nearly a half a century in the business life of Ferndale had gained the esteem and respect of all. His passing has left a vacancy which cannot be filled and has cast a shadow over the whole community. To the sorrowing wife and daughter the sympathy of all goes out in full measure.

The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at two o'clock from the family residence and was very largely attended by friends from all parts of the county. Rev. Jessie Getty Heath officiated, assisted by a choir composed of Miss Agnes Smith, Miss Mary Gill, Mrs. W.F. Rios and Mrs. M. Boynton, with Ross Ring as accompanist.

Decedent was a pioneer member of Active Lodge of Odd Fellows of this town and the Odd Fellows attended in a body, the officers of Active Lodge conducting the services at the grave. The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful.

The pallbearers were S.T. Kelsey, L.M. Smith, R.H. Edwards, A.E. Pixton, R.S. Feenaty and W. Turkelsen. Interment was in the family lot in the Ferndale cemetery.
