Bertrand Woody Mills was born June 15, 1917 near Animas, NM, the eighth of eleven children. While still a young child, he moved with his family by way of covered wagon to Wagoner, Arizona. Although he worked different jobs as a young man, his desire was to live the life of a cowboy. He worked on various ranches during the ten year period from 1937-1947, at which time he began working as a line man for the Bureau of Animal Industry. Later, he became a cattle inspector for the Department of Agriculture. He retired in 1980, but continued working with ranchers and riding his mule.

Bert married his dancing partner, Helen Burns on March 25, 1955. They resided in Lochiel, Arizona, a small community near Patagonia, and in 1981 moved to Rodeo, New Mexico, where they lived at the time of his death. They were blessed with one daughter, Sharon Lee, and two sons, John Dalton and Trace Cole. Lee resides with her husband, Tom Miller in Arizona. Dalt and his wife, Regina live in Wyoming, while Trace and his wife Tracey reside in Minnesota. Bert and Helen have 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Bert passed away on Sunday, November 23, 2008 in Tucson, Arizona, having suffered a brain hemorrhage a week earlier. Services were held Saturday, November 29, 2008 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Cotton City, New Mexico. He is buried in the Busy Bee Cemetery nearby.
