Dr. Lyman Beecher Bluitt passed away with his wife Veda at his bedside in St. Louis on May 12, 1921. He was 53 years old. Dr. Lyman was a surgeon whose medical practice spanned some 30 years, in locations from Texas, Nebraska, Cuba, Haiti, the Philippines, Illinois, and Missouri. 

Lyman "Lymus" Beecher Bluitt was born on May 8, 1866, Freestone County, Texas. He was the third of five offsprings born to Jarriett and Mariah "Maria" Bonner Bluitt. His parents were brought to Texas from Alabama before the beginning of the Civil War. Lyman received his early education in the local community. His formal education started at Tillotson Institute in Austin and then Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. Upon completing his undergraduate requirements, Lyman enrolled at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennesse -- the medical facility where his older brother Benjamin had received his medical education. Upon receiving his medical degree, Dr. Lyman Bluitt briefly opened his practice in Waco, Texas. While in Waco, he met and later married Veda Greer Easter on July 18, 1894.

Dr. Lyman Bluitt had a brief medical practice with his brother Dr. Benjamin in Dallas. However, he relocated and opened his own medical practice in Quincy, Illinois. When the Spanish-American War broke out, he became a civilian doctor with the U.S. Army.  He was briefly stationed stateside, then was transferred to Cuba where he served as an assistant surgeon with the 8th Regiment, an African-American Volunteer Infantry unit from Illinois. Dr. Bluitt returned to the United States and established his medical practice in St. Louis and later became an assistant county physician for St. Louis. Also, he was commissioned a first lieutenant and assigned as an assistant surgeon with the 8th Regiment, Illinois National Guard. 

Dr. Lyman Beecher Bluitt is preceded in death by his parents Jarriett and Mariah "Maria" Bonner Bluitt, brother Horace, and sister Emma. He leaves to cherish his memory wife of nearly 27 years Veda; brothers Dr. Benjamin Bluiit (Cornelia), and Stephen Bluitt, Sr. (Nora); and a host of nephews, nieces, and friends.
