Louis Ballard was married to Ann Ballard and together they had 5 children; Tony, Michael, Susan, Judi and Virginia. Louis was a descendant of the Catawba Native Americans from Rock Hill, South Carolina. As a young man, he was an Army staff sergeant in WWII and received a Purple Heart medal for being wounded in action. After the war, he owned his own dairy farm. In later years he was primarily a salesman. He sold many things; including cars, real estate, and he owned a pest control business when he died.
