Mariam Lee Johns Farmer, 91, of Vinton, was called home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, June 20, 2012. Mariam was born on April 22, 1921, in Vinton, Va., the daughter of Mattie and Robert Johns. She was a member of the Salem Church of Christ for over 50 years where she served as a Bible School teacher and supported the women's ministries. Mariam was a spirited wife, mother, and grandmother. She was strong, tough, industrious and never wasted anything even a half-used piece of paper. She repaired instead of replaced. She touched so many lives by sharing her talents. Mariam's passions were cooking, flowers, birds, sewing, and all types of crafts. She was always eager to teach, share, and work with others to help them learn a new skill. Mariam was a quick study herself and at age 84 learned how to use a computer. Using this new skill, she created a 400 recipe cookbook (which will be printed for family and friends) and enjoyed keeping in touch through email.
Mariam is survived by children, William (Bill) Farmer and wife, Bonnie, Joseph (Joe) Farmer and wife, Sharon, Carolyn Warren and husband, Bob, and Michael (Mike) Farmer and wife, Tammy; grandchildren, Deborah Holdren and husband, Tim, Shirley Morris, Donna Stockton, Dale Farmer, Todd Warren and wife, Sara, Brannon Warren and wife, Valerie, Jonathan Warren and wife, Michelle, Michael Brooks Farmer and wife, Kate, and Daniel Farmer; 13 great- grandchildren; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ralph and Betty Farmer; loving nieces and nephews; friends; and faithful neighbor, Cricket Reese.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Roscoe (Buck) Farmer; twin infant sons, Dennis Keith and Danny Heath; grandson, David Dyer Farmer; siblings, Tillie Anderson, Rachel Thompson, Frank Johns and Otha David Johns.
A special thanks to her caretakers, we call them her angels, Cathy Nichols and Beverly Barrett, who helped make her final days comfortable. Also a special thanks to the Penn Forest Christian Church Women's Ministries for their faithful support. All these ladies have been a blessing through their servant hearts.
Lotz Funeral Home, 1330 East Main Street, Salem, will coordinate the arrangements. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 22, 2012, at Lotz Funeral Home, Salem. Minister Jim Herron will lead the funeral service at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 23, 2012, at the funeral home. Interment following at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Lotz Funeral Home, Salem.
