Alma I. Maechtle
Mrs. Alma Maechtle, age 92 years, of Port Washington, died Monday evening, June 18, 2012, at Ellen's Home where she had been a resident for the past 1 ½ years.

She was born April 19, 1920 in Port Washington, daughter of Gotthold and Elsie Ferks Harrer. After graduating from Port Wahington High School in 1938, Alma worked at Harry's Restaurant, Star Publishing, and Bolens.

On January 10, 1945, she married Wilfred Maechtle at Grand Avenue United Methodist Church. He preceded her in death in 2004.

Alma worked as a secretary in the Port Washington-Saukville School District . As her career progressed she became the secretary for 3 different Principals under 5 different Superintendents, finishing up as the Superintendents' Administrative Secretary and Secretary to the School Board for 11 years. She was a secretary in every building in the district. Alma retired in 1983. She then went on to fill a vacant seat on the School Board and served the District in that capacity for 6 more years. While serving on the Board, she chaired the District's Policy Committee.

Alma was a longtime member of Grand Avenue United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. She is survived by her daughter Susan (the late Dennis) Merrill of Port Washington, two grandsons Dennis (Amy) Merrill of Littleton, MA and Peter (Shannon Fox) Merrill of Lake Villa, IL, two great grandchildren Tyler and Emily, her sister-in-law Marlene Berke, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and her many friends at Ellen's Home. She was preceded in death by three brothers Clarence, Albert, and Alfred Harrer and two sisters Alvina Schubert and Olga Decker.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 30, 11 AM at Grand Avenue United Methodist Church, 505 W. Grand Ave., Port Washington, with Pastor David Guse presiding. Inurnment will be in Union Cemetery. Visitation at the CHURCH Saturday from 10 AM until time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Grand Avenue United Methodist Church appreciated.
