Charlene Wheeler Shepherd, 80, of Wilmington, NC passed away peacefully in her sleep early Tuesday morning, June 19, 2012. She was born in Greenup County KY on August 1, 1931 to Annie & Bill Wheeler. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother (Billy), three brothers-in-law (Roger Selby, Dick Beverly & Earl Bowling) and her niece (Karen Applegate Rigsby). She is survived by a large and loving family: her three sisters (Louise Selby, Evelyn Beverly & Phyllis Applegate), her brother (Bob Wheeler); her brother-in-law (Bob Applegate), her sister-in-law (Tami Wheeler), her ex-husband Roger Shepherd, her sister-in-law and high school friend Rosie Shepherd Bowling, her children Greg Shepherd, Elaine Sammons & Lynne Shepherd; her son-in-law Scott Sammons, her daughters-in-law Julie Shepherd & Kathy Meyer; her grand-children Chris Sammons & his wife Acacia, Matt Sammons, Emily Foley & her husband Dustin and Anna Claire Shepherd; her first great-grandchild Ava Marie Sammons; her nieces and their families (Jane Bowling, Anna Louise Wheeler, Charlene Barnett & Alice Wheeler, Bev & Roger Gifford and their children Leslie & Gretchen, Sandi Pumpelly & her children Kenton, Tucker, Chole & Blaine). Charlene was born in Greenup County KY. She attended Portsmouth High School where she was a majorette. In 1952 she married Roger Shepherd. They were together for 22 years and the marriage was blessed with 3 children, 4 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild, all of whom loved her deeply. Charlene relished her role as mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She both prayed with, and played with, her children and grandchildren and loved holding her new great-granddaughter. Charlene held various jobs over the years: health care provider for the sick and elderly, salesperson in a craft store where her expertise was sought out by customers, administrative assistant at UNC-Wilmington, and her much loved job in the admitting department of New Hanover Regional Medical Center from which she retired after 14 years. Charlene loved having the opportunity to interact with others on a daily basis. Upon her passing, she was a resident at Cypress Pointe Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, where she was known for having the "cheeriest room." Charlene was appointed President of the Resident's Committee while at Cypress Pointe, again showing her willingness to be involved in the life of those around her. Her family would like to thank the staff for the great meals and the loving care provided to her by the staff at Cypress Point. Charlene started attending church during elementary school. In high school, she was involved in her church youth group led by Geraldine Conway. Charlene stayed committed to her faith throughout her life. This commitment could be seen in many ways: she was an active member of Friendship Methodist Church in OH and for many years she held "Lay Speaker's Credentials" from the Ohio Annual Conference of the Methodist Church; she was a youth group leader for Friendship Methodist Church & Oldtown Methodist Church for several years. After moving to NC, Charlene was an active member of both Wesley United Methodist Church and Myrtle Grove Presbyterian Church. She had the opportunity to travel internationally where she was the guest speaker of a women's Bible study in Philippines. While in Asia, she worked with a mission organization to smuggle Bibles and Christian literature into China. Throughout her life Charlene led countless Bible Studies, often spoke at Christian events in her local communities, and was a person to whom many people turned for spiritual advice and counsel. She raised her children with a love of the Lord and a deep understanding of the power of prayer. She will be greatly missed by all. A memorial service will be held at Myrtle Grove Presbyterian Church on Monday, June 25, 2012 at 3:00 pm. The viewing will be Friday June, 29 2012 from 6-8:00 p.m. at the Roger W. Davis Funeral Home, 1310 3rd St., West Portsmouth, OH 45663. Funeral Services will be held 10:00 AM Saturday, June 30, 2012 at the Roger W. Davis Funeral Home with Rev. Dan Sonnenberg officiating with interment in Memorial Burial Park. Honorary Pallbearers are Pat Cirasco, Mary Ann Reutzal, Betty Brown, Rosie Bowling, Sandy Hurd, Carolyn Hicks, Sondra Robertson, Adelaide Stanley, Shirley Cable, Karen Cannon, Wilma Lanier, Steve Mattis & Jim Glasgow.
