She graduated from Springville High School in 1930 and Brigham Young University in 1935. She taught school in Genola and Lake Shore. On June 28, 1939 in the Salt Lake Temple she married Floyd Huff Evans.
Merlene loved sewing, crocheting, genealogy and calligraphy. She was an avid reader and "news junkie". As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she enjoyed serving in many ward and stake callings. She was an active and energetic 100 year old, living in her own home.
She adored her loving family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She even remembered all of their birthdays. Merlene is survived by her children, David Floyd Evans, Spanish Fork, UT; Belva Jean Robbins, Salt Lake City, UT; James Spender (Susan) Evans, Lake Shore, UT; Jane Ann (David) Scottorn, Greenbrier, TN and a sister in law, Leora Davis, Payson, UT. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd, and outlived all her siblings, Max Whiting Sumsion, Naomi Gardner, Randall Lee Sumsion and a grandson, Kirby Ray Robbins.
A special thanks to all the friends and neighbors who watched over Mom in her later years. We Love You Mom!
