Mr. Burkes, born in Killeen, Bell County, Texas, was the son of the late J.T. Burkes. In addition to his father, he was also preceded in death by an infant brother, James Thomas Burkes. He graduated with honors from Sampson Community College with a business degree and accounting. He was a Vietnam Veteran of the US Army having served sixteen years. He retired from the NCDOT, where he worked with the road oil division.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Phyllis Ann Phillips Burkes, of the home; two daughters, Melissa Young of Clinton and Michelle Martin of Louisburg; one son, Mark Wiggings of Clinton; his mother, Mary Ambrose Burton Burkes of Arizona; on sister; Mary Ruth Riecken of Fayetteville; two brothers, Robert Burkes of Arizona; and Joe Burkes of Texas; and four grandsons.
The family received friends Thursday evening, June 14, 2012, from 6-8pm at the Crumpler-Honeycutt Funeral Home and other times at the home.
The funeral services were held at 11am, Friday, June 15, 2012 at the Clinton Family Worship Center with Pastor Lynn Blackburn officiating.
Burial was made in Clinton City Cemetery.
