1847: Ran for Attorney General on Democratic ticket, defeated by Whig/Anti-Rent candidate Ambrose L. Jordan. In 1849, elected New York State Attorney General, re-elected in 1851. In office from 1850 to 1853 when he resigned three weeks before end of term
1853-54: Major stockholder of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad
1869: Appeared for plaintiff David Groesbeck in suit against Trinity Church "incorporators"
Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Andrew G. Chatfield (1810–1875) was his brother

... No son of Otsego nor resident of the County has ever been elected by the people to a State administrative office except Levi S. Chatfield, then of Laurens, who was elected Attorney General in 1849, and as I recollect resigned before his term expired. (Resigned Nov. 23rd, 1853.)

Feb 21, 1855, Wisconsin Free Democrat, Milwaukee:
Injury to Mr. Chatfield--At six o'clock last evening, as the Hon. Levi S. Chatfield and Mr. Hiram Barney were passing up Broadway, standing upon the outside of a stage sleigh of the avenue line, when opposite Cortlandt street they were met by a eight horse sleigh, the dash board of which struck Mr. Chatfield in the abdomen, prostrating him senseless on the ground. Mr. Barney was struck upon the shoulder, which was dislocated by the force of the blow, and he and Mr. Chatfield was carried to his house in Lexington avenue, seriously and dangerously injured

The Herald of a later date says: "Mr. Chatfield is fast recovering from the effects of his injuries. Hemorrhage from the lungs has entirely ceased, and, without further unpleasant symptoms arising, he will in six or eight days, be able to resume his business."

CHATFIELD--At his residence, Elizabeth, N.J., LEVI S. CHAFIELD, in the 77th year of his age. Funeral services at his late residence, No. 651 North st., Elizabeth, N.J. Wednesday afternoon, August 6, at half-past three o'clock. Interment in Laurens, Otsego county, N.Y.
