Our loving husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family June 18, 2012 at the age of 74. Richard was born May 9, 1938 in Lansing to the late Owen and Gladys (Arney) Abbey. Richard was a born again Christian who faithfully served his country in the U.S. Navy Seabees. He retired as a draftsman for the State of Michigan after many years of service. Richard will be fondly remembered as a talented musician with the remarkable gift of improv on a variety of instruments. Preceded in death by his parents; nephew, Cpl. Nyle Yates, III, who was killed in Iraq in 2006; and very special aunt, Rev. Shirley Tupper. Surviving to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Teresa (Tupper) Abbey; daughters, Teri (Windi) Abbey, Stefanie Abbey and fiancé Jordan Luna; sons, David (Beverly) Abbey, and Richard (Stephanie) Abbey; grandchildren, Kathlene, Joseph, Zachary and Xavier; niece, Krystal Yates; and nephews, Brian Shields and Shane Tupper. A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 1, 2012 at 3:00 PM at Lake Lansing Park, North (across from the boat launch at main pavilion) in Haslett, MI. Those desiring may make contributions to VFW National Home for Children, 3573 S. Waverly Rd., Eaton Rapids, MI 48827 in memory of Richard.
