Frances Gilliland Thomas, 86, Henderson, formerly of Hopkinsville, died Monday, June 18, 2012, in Henderson of natural causes.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Maddux-Fuqua-Hinton Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Brooks Major officiating.

Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday from noon until time for the service at the funeral home.

She was faculty advisor for the college's literary publication, The Round Table, and founded and established the Round Table Park on the campus of Hopkinsville Community College, where she was a long-time professor of English and literature.

During her career at the college, she served as chairwoman of the humanities division, chairwoman of the Fine Arts Festival, chair of the Performers of International Festival, was a member of the college advisory board and faculty advisor to the student government and speaker to the symposium on the life and works of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Robert Penn Warren and conducted many seminars.

She also led Great Books discussion groups.

She was recipient of the Chamber of Commerce Award for the development of Round Table Park, and the Great Teacher Award from the University of Kentucky Alumni Association and professor emeritus.

She served on the board of the Hopkinsville Community Concert Association and the library board.

She was the recipient of the Hopkinsville City-County Environmental Protection and Improvement Commission's "Life Involvement for Environment" award for her spearheading the Round Table Park development.

In addition, she was the recipient of the Austin Peay State University's Alumni-Admissions Service Award.

A native of Christian County, she was born March 1, 1926, the daughter of the late Robert and Mary Belle Gilliland.

Survivors include three daughters, Pamela Thomas, Debbie James,and Francie Thomas; a grandson and two great-grandsons.
