DeWitt Clinton was born in Hume, NY in 1846. (His birth year is listed incorrectly on his memorial marker.) With his father's consent, he enlisted and served from September 10, 1862 to June 10, 1865 in Company F. 4th Heavy Artillery of New York and was honorably discharged at the close of the war. His older brother, Daniel, enlisted at the same time. After the war, DeWitt learned his father's trade of shoemaker. He later became a minister.

DeWitt married Isadore Stone on June 1, 1870. They had three children: Mary Lucille, Harold Reese, and Carolyn Louise. In the 1900 census, the children lived with their mother in Sweden, NY, but DeWitt lived in Chicago.

DeWitt married Mary Elizabeth Ney in Ontario, Canada on May 1, 1906. DeWitt is listed as a widower on their marriage license. During their marriage they lived in Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, and Washington. They had three children: Marian Elaine, DeWitt Clinton Jr., and Donald Nelson Nye. In the 1930 census, DeWitt and his three children lived in Algona, Washington. DeWitt officiated at his daughter Marian's wedding in 1931. He died in Pacific, Washington in November 1935.
