Samuel was the youngest of about eight children born to Daniel Carmichael and Nancy Murdock in Lislea, County Derry.

In early 1854 Crimean War fever gripped Ireland with over 30,000 young men rushing to sign up, many assuming it would all be over in a few months. The 50th Foot was the first to sail, from Dublin.

It is not known whether Samuel died in battle or during the terrible Cholera epidemic that took the lives of 6,000 British soldiers.

The Selimiye Barracks in Istanbul was converted into a military hospital by Florence Nightingale.

The cemetery is also known as Haydarpaşa İngiliz, located in the Üsküdar District of Istanbul.
