Egbert L. Davis, Sr. was a prominent Winston-Salem civic and business leader who began his business career at age 23 as a salesman for R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in 1905. In 1922, he was one of the men who founded the Security and Life Trust Company (Integon) in Winston-Salem. He then helped found North Carolina Baptist Hospital in 1923, where he was the first chairman of the Board of Trustees, a position he held for 20 years. The year before Davis' retirement from R. J. Reynolds Tobacco in 1924, he organized Atlas Supply Company, which was a distributor for plumbing, heating and air conditioning. In 1931, he opened up Davis Department Store located on Fourth Street in Winston-Salem. As a 1904 graduate of Wake Forest College, Davis Sr. was very instrumental in the 1956 move of Wake Forest College from Wake Forest, NC to Winston-Salem, NC. Egbert L. Davis, Sr. died in 1974 at the age of 92.
