William A. Schmitz married Clara Wiese in the spring of 1917; the following year, in April of 1918, she gave birth to Leo William, whom they referred to as Billy. Only a few months later, as the war was ending, the spreading flu pandemic caused a worldwide panic, and tragedy struck the Schmitz family. Little more than 2 weeks after the joyous news of the November 11th Armistice, William died on November 27th, 1918; seven-month old Billy died the next day. Father and son were laid to rest in the St. Peter's cemetery in Lindsay, the baby cradled in his father's arms.
